Ear To Ear

Yesterday, I received my second letter from my world vision child, Jonnel. I was so happy when I saw those familiar handwriting again! This boy makes me so proud. I beam when I see his penmanship and even those erasures. I imagine his parents trying to coach him how to compose his reply. On his first letter, he addressed me as "mahal kong sponsor", now he calls me mama neys (I like that more, hehe). He likes basketball, dancing and during his summer vacation, he was learning how to write more legibly.

You see, I am not a financially wealthy person. I simply live within my means. When I turned 25, I told myself that I want to make the rest of my dreams come true. Now, I want to help make this boy's dreams come true. Kahit simulan ko muna sa kanya.

Thank you, Papa Jesus for this beautiful experience! /njda

Jonnel

There is always an opportunity to help. I have thought about it a long time ago. What held me back was simple- it was not my priority. With that amount, I have a week’s allowance already. I can have at least one climb per month. I can watch a movie at least 4 times. Etc.

My father has been in the hospital for more than a month now. It is a struggle for our family. It is still a blessing though that we live each day and we survive. God reveals his overflowing grace; finally, I took my baby steps in this beautiful vision. I wholeheartedly dedicate this experience to my parents especially to my father, who wielded all efforts to send me and brother to school. I hope that someday I will become a great parent just like my nanay and tatay.

For more information, I would like to invite you, friends, to visit www.worldvisionphilippines.com. Thank you very much!

May 14, 2009

This goes out to a very dear friend who is celebrating his 26th wonderful years of existence.

XD

Going Green: Household Tips

Happy Earth Day!
Let's make everyday our Earth Day! /njda

Small steps can make a big difference when it comes to saving the Earth. If you are ready to start going green, take a look at this list of 10 items you should avoid buying and using in your home. Some of these items not only hurt the Earth, they could also be harmful to your family! We suggest alternative choices to help make these eco-friendly changes a bit easier.

Styrofoam cups
Styrofoam is not biodegradable, which means it's here forever. Next time, get your coffee to go in a reusable coffee mug or thermos. Skip the fast food, and use glass and metal storage containers whenever possible.

Paper products and plastic utensils
Properly managed, paper is a renewable resource. But many of us tend to use more paper products than necessary. Paper towels and napkins are particularly wasteful of forest resources, landfill space, and your money. If you do purchase paper towels or napkins, make sure you buy an eco-friendly variety. A better alternative is to use cloth napkins at meals, and rags, sponges, or towels to clean up messes.

Like paper products, plastic utensils rate high on the waste scale. Most disposable plastic utensils are used once and thrown away, rather than recycled. Since they are not biodegradable, they will live on forever in the environment. Consider washing and reusing plastic utensils, or stick to regular cutlery or portable metal mess kits.

Bleached coffee filters
Dioxins are chemicals formed during the chlorine bleaching process. Dioxins contaminate groundwater and air, and have been linked to cancer in both humans and animals. If you are a coffee drinker, make sure you buy eco-friendly unbleached filters, which are healthier for both you and the environment.

Overpackaged food and products
How often do you buy products that are wrapped in layers of heavy plastic, bubble wrap, or mounds of packing peanuts? Excess packaging wastes resources and costs you more money. A large portion of the trash in American households comes from packaging, which contributes to our overflowing landfills. Whenever possible, buy products in bulk, without excess packaging. If you must buy smaller sizes, look for products that are packaged in recycled or recyclable materials. Take a stand and let companies know that you will not buy their overpackaged products. And when you pack your own parcels for shipment at the post office, do so sparingly.

Tropical hardwoods
Teak and mahogany are beautiful, long-lasting woods. Demand for these woods has increased their harvesting from tropical rainforests, where over half of the planet's plant and animal species reside. Help protect the rainforests. Next time you are in the market for wood furniture, make sure it's manufactured through certified forestry programs. Even better, consider purchasing products made from bamboo, a highly renewable resource that causes less damage to the environment.

Household cleaners
Many household cleaning products contain hazardous ingredients. Rather than purchasing products with scary warning labels, try to buy natural cleaners. They are better for your skin, your lungs, and your indoor environment. You can even make them yourself! Baking soda, vinegar, and salt are the main ingredients of a green-clean home. A clean home doesn't have to be an unhealthy one.

Graduation 2009

Graduation season is always an exciting part of my life as an employee and as a person. I look forward to this all the time. I am giddy just like our students. I wonder who among my “anaks” will graduate. I am thrilled on what they will wear and how will they look in their graduation pictures. I eagerly wait for their uploaded photos on friendster. I chuckle when they change their haircut and put on make- up when we see them on their rehearsals. I know that it can be pretty awkward, I’ve been there. I feel proud when I see my boys and my girls become the gentlemen and the ladies fully dressed for the event.

I remember how it felt when I graduated 5 years ago. That was super exciting event in my life. Being raised by a simple family and sent to school by a military man with the aid of countless loans, I know how the struggle felt. And now I feel proud that now I am a part of something that gave me the opportunity to witness students make their dreams come true.

So, to all my graduating Civil, Sanitary and Marine engineering students, my sincerest congratulations to all of you! You make me proud. I can’t thank you enough for what I have learned from you. Go build the nation and conquer the high seas! I pray that you will be truly happy and you will all serve your purpose. Do not be afraid of what lies ahead.

Welcome to the workforce, our dear TIP students! Enjoy every moment of it and still make your family proud. Give your parents a hug! Treat them on your first paycheck. And remember, that all glory is still His! I love you and I’ll miss you all!
